It was a Beautiful Weekend!!11/15/10
We had fifties and sunny all weekend, but it looks like the rain and sleet are back for a few days.  Forties now and raining

Cold and Rainy 11.9.10
Right now the conditions are cold and rainy down in Placid with snow and ice up higher.  The forecast is calling for clear and warmer towards the weekend with temps in the 50's.  While this should make conditions on the ground pleasant, if you are planning to hike into the mountains be prepared for winter conditions.  Crampons are a must and snowshoes would also be advisable.

Whiteface toll road 10.16.10
Our guide Jeff went out and skied the toll road, up and down! Lets hope its here to stay

Colden 10.16.10
failed attempt on account of snow! yes thats right a huge blizzard blew in the 15th...approx 4inches. This made for some messy mud and slop and slush at the trailhead parking but luckily trail crews were out trying to control the mess. At about 3000ft the snow line starts--the split from avalanche pass to lake arnold. At 3,500 ft there is about 2+ feet of snow requiring snowshoes and possibly crampons for the verglas rock sections. Hikers bailed here on account of too much snow and because they were unprepared. Winter is here so grab the goodies and hit the trails!

Big Slide 10.4.10
Beautiful loop: up the brothers then down to JBL and out following johns brook. Trails are still muddy from the rain, and streams are high. Gaiters, good boots and cold weather gear is definitely needed as snow should be here anytime now. Temp was high 30ies low 40ies at the summit with a cool breeze but crisp clear views of the prime foliage.

Recent Weather 10.1.10
Hurricane like winds and rain seemed to be the day yesterday. The 29th saw beautiful weather as it was cool with a slight breeze and a heavy sun. The 30th was a washout, in fact its still raining and Lake Placid has seen some flooding. Be cautions on the trails. Pitchoff Mt. has seen tree blowdowns and I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the trails are under water. Bring appropriate gear and safe travels!

Algonquin 9.28.10
Decent cloud cover, and constant rain from the previous nights drenched the trail, making it a full flowing stream on the way up. Past the Junction water is cascading down the rocks so be sure to avoid the center stream as it could be some loose footing. The trail into the junction suffered some recent flooding. The bridge just down the trail a ways from the Adirondack Lodge is partially under water. If you have good balance walk along the edge of the rail, otherwise waterproof boots will suffice.

The Changing Leaves
For those who haven't been staying posted on the status of the leaves and their changing colors, I'd recommend hitting the trails now! Peak leaf season is here and will be gone within the next two weeks. Snow will be flying very shortly after that, so stay posted on the anticipated trail conditions.

Views From the Top Forum
9.20.10

One of the best online trail conditions forums for hiking on the east coast is Views From the Top. Over the course of several years they have grown from a pure condition report to a Q&A, tips, events, and trip reporting venue.  Their initial idea was fantastic and it grew with respectable input. From hikers posting their 3-day circuit to hikers posting a half an hour day hike, the forum exploded with people willing to not only share the current trail situation but also suggestions of what to bring and what to look out for, even some of their goof-ups.

Anyone can offer a post, so if you have a recent trip, a question, or some keynote conditions don't hesitate to add to the mix.

Conditions: 9.18.10

Nice weather today left the trails dry with a few mud patches here and there after our two day long rainstorm. Currently, the leaves are beginning to change and peak season should be here in early October, as usual!
